Political science sits at the crossroads of history, politics, economics, legal studies, sociology, and theoretical frameworks. By examining governmental systems—their political dynamics, policy decisions, and operational methods—we cultivate more engaged citizenship both locally and internationally.
The University of Rochester focuses on the scientific foundations of political science, incorporating rigorous testing, data analysis, and theoretical development. Our department uniquely combines political science and international relations, allowing students to explore American governance and political structures through the lenses of global conflicts, economic exchange, and societal change. Rochester undergraduates can enrich their political science or international relations education through internships, overseas study programs, and research initiatives. These experiences strengthen academic profiles and professional credentials, preparing students for advanced studies or career paths.
The BS in political science shares core requirements with the BA program but includes additional analytical methodology prerequisites. Students must complete at least one collaborative learning course. These 15 required courses offer diverse options such as research seminars, hands-on learning experiences, teaching assistantships, independent projects, guided research, honors theses, and internship placements.
