The Statistics Program oversees instruction of undergraduate statistics courses for majors, minors, and all other bachelor's degree programs. The School of Medicine and Dentistry houses the Department of Biostatistics, which manages master's and doctoral programs. Both units maintain vibrant research initiatives in statistical theory and methodology involving faculty and students.
This program delivers required statistics coursework for statistics majors/minors and all bachelor's degree curricula.
Students can pursue two undergraduate statistics degrees: a Bachelor of Science (BS) or Bachelor of Arts (BA).
The BA program provides broad training in statistical methods, covering methodology, computational techniques, and practical applications. Through complementary coursework, students examine statistics as a cross-disciplinary subject.
This makes the BA particularly suitable for students considering dual majors that incorporate statistical methods (such as economics, business, mathematics, or computer science). The BA provides adaptable training in fundamental statistical approaches applicable across numerous disciplines.
Career Paths
Statistics degrees open doors to diverse careers and graduate studies. In our data-driven world affecting healthcare, policy, and commerce, statistical training offers significant advantages. University of Rochester statistics graduates have secured positions at government agencies (including Census Bureau, Agriculture, Energy, and Labor Departments), insurance firms, pharmaceutical companies, and other sectors. An undergraduate statistics degree also prepares students for advanced study in statistics, economics, mathematics, political science, psychology, and related fields. Professional schools (law, medicine, etc.) frequently value applicants with statistics backgrounds.
