Modern Languages and Cultures (MLC) allows students to pursue clusters, minors, and majors in various languages including comparative literature, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish. Additionally, Chinese is available as a cluster and minor, while Korean and Portuguese can be taken as clusters.
Over 125 million people speak Japanese worldwide. Although primarily spoken in Japan, significant Japanese-speaking communities exist in countries like Brazil, Peru, Argentina, Australia, Canada, and the United States. MLC majors typically complete ten to thirteen courses, with requirements adjusted based on prior language experience. All MLC programs share two foundational courses, while core and elective options differ by language track.
Except for Comparative Literature, all MLC majors follow this structure:
Students can choose from diverse Japanese language courses catering to different proficiency levels, along with offerings focused on Japanese culture, media, and historical studies.
