The Bachelor of Arts in Engineering Science (BA-ES) is an interdisciplinary program focused on comprehending and applying engineering, scientific, and mathematical concepts. It establishes a comprehensive grounding in the sciences and related mathematics that form the basis of engineering, allowing students to gain specialized knowledge in a chosen field through technical electives.
The BA-ES program builds a strong base for careers such as patent law, technical writing, science advising, technical sales, and science and engineering education. As there is no uniform curriculum, the engineering science major does not hold ABET accreditation. Students pursuing licensure as professional engineers should note that this non-accredited program necessitates extra education, work, and/or experience to be eligible for the Fundamentals of Engineering exam.
Engineering science students can focus on one or more key areas by strategically selecting their electives and cluster courses, leading to deeper expertise in a specific subject and potentially a minor. Since BA-ES students are not bound to set tracks, the provided four-year plans are merely recommendations for specializations.
Those interested in sustainable environmental engineering may explore majoring in engineering science with a minor in sustainability, which fulfills the social science requirement of the Rochester curriculum (shown in red courses). To complement this, students could complete the humanities cluster in Sustainability and the Humanities (indicated by italicized courses).
