Rochester offers the perfect environment to examine how digital technology intersects with critical thinking, creative production, and groundbreaking innovation. Our digital media studies (DMS) program integrates:
A cross-disciplinary liberal arts foundation
A legacy of visionary thinking and entrepreneurial spirit
Connections to the George Eastman Museum, the globe's premier photography institution and among the earliest film archives
A campus-wide dedication to advancing digital arts and technology
We maintain that media creators benefit from understanding its history and theory, just as analysts gain from production experience. Consequently, DMS stands among the rare programs nationally that unite media scholarship, critique, and hands-on creation.
For their culminating project, students collaboratively develop a substantial digital media work. Teams apply their combined understanding of media history, theory, artistic principles, and technical skills to evaluate client proposals or initiate original concepts.
The DMS major spans fourteen interdisciplinary courses and can fulfill either humanities or natural science requirements, depending on which seven-plus courses students complete within the program.
