The University of Rochester's Dance and Movement Program provides hands-on and academic exploration of dance traditions that nurture holistic growth. Our curriculum embraces global movement practices, examining dance as artistic expression, spiritual discipline, social connection, and personal transformation.
The Rochester dance experience emphasizes conscious awareness, inclusivity, body-centered learning, and cooperative creation. Students can engage with various course offerings, performance events, and research projects spanning multiple genres: Contemporary, African, Ballet, Yoga, Tap, Breaking, Capoeira, Jazz, Middle Eastern, Contact Improvisation, Performance Improvisation, Dance Therapy, Tai Chi, Qi Gong, Choreography, Teaching, Kinesiology, Movement Analysis, World Dance, Meditation, Dance Film, and cross-disciplinary connections with fields like social justice, psychology, disability studies, cognitive science, African American studies, gender studies, physics, and beyond.
We provide a Bachelor of Arts in Dance with two specialization options: Creative Expression & Performance or Dance Studies.
Our adaptable program allows concentration on Western styles like modern dance and ballet, or global forms including African Diaspora traditions such as West African dance, capoeira, Zimbabwean dance, hip hop, and jazz. Note that cross-listed courses may only count toward one requirement category.
