The University of Rochester's Dance and Movement Program provides hands-on and academic exploration of dance traditions that nurture holistic personal growth. This distinctive curriculum examines movement as artistic expression, spiritual discipline, community connection, and a tool for individual and collective transformation through global dance forms and mindful practices.
Rochester's dance education emphasizes conscious awareness, inclusivity, body-centered learning, and cooperative creation. Students can engage with various classes, intensives, productions, and scholarly projects spanning multiple genres and fields, such as: Modern dance, Traditional African dance, Classical ballet, Yoga practice, Tap dancing, Breakdancing, Brazilian Capoeira, Jazz dance, Middle Eastern styles, Contact Improvisation, Performance Improvisation, Dance Therapy, Tai Chi, Qi Gong, Choreographic creation, Dance pedagogy, Movement science, Motion analysis, International dance forms, Meditative movement, Cinematic dance, and cross-disciplinary connections with fields like equity studies, mental health research, disability advocacy, neuroscience, African diaspora studies, gender scholarship, physics, and beyond
The department grants a Bachelor of Arts in dance with two concentration options: Performance and Creative Practice or Dance Scholarship.
