The Dance program stands out for its exceptional faculty of renowned artists and scholars with diverse expertise spanning choreography, visual arts, creative writing, literature, African diasporic traditions, Hip Hop, Indian dance forms, Indigenous studies, digital media, performance theory, queer studies, and cultural analysis.
The B.A. curriculum combines Choreography/Dance Creation with Dance Studies coursework, culminating in a capstone project focused on either performance or academic research (though students may pursue both). This program fosters innovative artistic inquiry while examining dance through cultural and historical lenses, exploring themes like aesthetics, creative processes, embodiment, identity, and social structures. Students maintain continuous movement training across various styles including Hip Hop, Modern, Ballet, Jazz, West African, House, Capoeira, Somatics, Yoga, and Latin Social Dance, with additional offerings from visiting artists.
Dance students enjoy numerous performance platforms such as UCR is Dancing and Spring Forward - annual showcases of student choreography. They may also tour with the undergraduate ensemble through the Gluck Fellows Program, collaborate on graduate projects, and occasionally work alongside faculty and guest artists.
The department regularly hosts professional dancers, choreographers, and scholars for workshops and lectures. Financial support includes the Chancellor's Performance Award (up to $2,000), assistantships, research grants, and summer study stipends. Outstanding undergraduates may receive $1,500 Maxwell H. Gluck Fellowships.
