Acquire the expertise required to perform advanced laboratory research, preparing for careers in demanding chemical and biological sectors. A chemistry graduate degree's core focus is hands-on research. This explains why URI's program helps new graduate students thrive in research labs from the start. Course requirements are intentionally limited to maximize time for guided and self-directed research.
All first-year graduate students must complete 10 credits of cross-disciplinary courses: Chemical Safety (CHM 500), Reaction Processes (CHM 505), Analytical Chemistry (CHM 506), and Molecular Structure (CHM 507). Unlike many programs, URI's Chemistry Department waives placement exams, instead offering this foundational curriculum to prepare students for contemporary research challenges.
By their second semester, students select their research advisor and commence projects, needing just two more courses. Research spans multiple disciplines, with active programs in materials science, sensor technology, battery development, medical chemistry, light-driven reactions, renewable energy, energetic materials, and insect chemistry.
