Graduate students can pursue advanced studies with Chemistry faculty beyond the Master of Science level through the department's connection with Applied Science. Those considering doctoral work should proactively reach out to Chemistry faculty whose research aligns with their interests to verify both suitable dissertation opportunities and available funding. Students aiming for the dual M.S. in Chemistry and Ph.D. in Applied Science begin by enrolling in the Chemistry graduate program. After successfully completing one to three semesters of coursework and research, with their advisor's endorsement, they may transition to the Applied Science doctoral program if they wish to continue their research at the Ph.D. level. Alternatively, students can apply directly to the Applied Science Ph.D. program if they intend to work with Chemistry faculty.
For the combined Chemistry M.S./Applied Science Ph.D. track, students should collaborate with their advisors to design a coursework strategy that meets both programs' requirements. Transitioning from the Chemistry M.S. to the Applied Science Ph.D. requires passing a comprehensive qualifying exam covering the student's specialization and relevant core Applied Science coursework (unless exempt). This exam can also fulfill the Chemistry M.S. comprehensive exam requirement. Students accepted into the Applied Science Ph.D. program are not required to complete a thesis for their Chemistry M.S. degree.
