The Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems (SAFS) graduate program employs an interdisciplinary, systems-focused methodology to study biological and environmental sciences within agricultural, aquatic, nutritional, and food safety contexts. Our faculty team, representing both natural and social sciences, utilizes diverse methodologies to promote economically viable and environmentally sound practices in production, management, consumption, and utilization of biological resources for community health.
Research focuses span animal science, aquaculture, aquatic pathology, ecological anthropology, ethnobiology, entomology, fisheries, nutrition and food sciences, plant sciences, resource economics and policy, and integrated food systems. SAFS leverages the exceptional outreach initiatives of Rhode Island Agricultural Experiment Station, Rhode Island Sea Grant, and the Coastal Resources Center. We maintain strong partnerships with industry, government agencies, and NGOs, sharing research findings locally and internationally to support sustainable sector development.
