Your academic and studio coursework is enhanced by hands-on experience during the production season. Every year, significant theater productions offer chances to practice, implement, and evaluate the knowledge and techniques learned in class.
The program emphasizes practical studio training, while the B.A. degree includes more lecture-based and discussion-oriented courses. Typically, a B.F.A. program dedicates about two-thirds of its curriculum to the arts and one-third to broader liberal arts subjects, whereas a B.A. in Theatre might reverse this balance. This intensive studio-focused approach provides graduates with a distinct advantage in the field. This unique emphasis sets our program apart from other institutions.
Aspiring directors must complete an extra 33 to 35 credits, including: Individual or Group Theatre Studies, Play Direction, Playwriting, Theatre Management, Stage Costume, Scene, or Lighting Design, Advanced Individual or Group Theatre Studies, as well as specialized courses like Topics in Theatre, Theatre Architecture in Global Drama, Theatre Aesthetics and Criticism, and a Special Research Project. Additionally, students must finish a year-long acting sequence, choosing between: (1) Basic Acting I & II plus Acting Workshop I & II, or (2) Scene Study I & II along with Acting Workshop I & II.
