This program caters to a select group of experienced students with supervisory or administrative backgrounds. Spanning three academic years plus two summer sessions, the curriculum combines foundational and elective MSW courses with core MBA requirements. Students complete field internships focused on management and policy development within diverse settings like social service agencies, healthcare institutions, philanthropic organizations, and government bodies. Graduates earn both a Master of Social Work (MSW) and Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree. Modern organizational leadership in any sector - nonprofit, corporate, startup, or community-based - requires a blend of business acumen, psychological insight, and innovative thinking. The interdisciplinary MSW/MBA program, offered through Penn's School of Social Policy & Practice and Wharton, cultivates these multidimensional capabilities. Social work training in human behavior, social systems, ethical practice, and intervention strategies equips leaders to develop humane policies. Meanwhile, business education in operations, workforce management, market analysis, and organizational strategy enhances leadership effectiveness while maintaining ethical standards.
Applicant must have obtained a bachelor's degree from an accredited School or University prior to intended matriculation date.
A strong command of the English language is necessary for successful study at Penn. Applicants whose families do not speak English at home, or applicants who have not attended a high school or secondary school where the primary language of instruction is English, are asked to take the TOEFL, the Test of English as a Foreign Language, administered by the Educational Testing Service. In the event the TOEFL is not readily accessible, Penn will accept results from the IELTS, the International English Language Testing System.
