The MSW/MSSP dual degree equips graduates for leadership roles across various sectors including government, philanthropic organizations, research institutions, nonprofits, NGOs, and similar fields. Students from both clinical and macro concentrations within the MSW program can pursue this combined degree. By enrolling in this program, candidates can earn both a Master of Social Work and Master of Science in Social Policy through 22 courses. The standalone MSW requires 16 credit units (11 core courses plus 5 electives), while the independent MSSP comprises 10 credit units (7 required courses and 3 electives). In the dual-degree track, students can apply up to four shared courses toward both programs. While some may finish both degrees in two academic years plus two summer terms, many students typically require five or six semesters (excluding summers) to fulfill all requirements. Although simultaneous application to both programs is ideal, current MSW students may also apply to the MSSP during their first year.
Applicants for master’s and doctoral programs must have obtained a bachelor’s degree from an accredited School or University prior to intended matriculation date.
A strong command of the English language is necessary for successful study at Penn. Applicants whose families do not speak English at home, or applicants who have not attended a high school or secondary school where the primary language of instruction is English, are asked to take the TOEFL, the Test of English as a Foreign Language, administered by the Educational Testing Service. In the event the TOEFL is not readily accessible, Penn will accept results from the IELTS, the International English Language Testing System.
