Educating students from PreK through 4th grade involves multiple dimensions, and we recognize that training for urban teaching environments introduces unique challenges. The UTAP PreK-4 certification program addresses these challenges through its structured curriculum (including fieldwork, coursework, and professional development workshops) within its distinctive five-term academic calendar, lasting 10 months. Apprentice educators develop skills to support the holistic needs of young learners. Our curriculum offers comprehensive training in four fundamental subjects: Mathematics, Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies, emphasizing that excellent subject instruction is essential. Nurturing the whole child requires apprentices to understand developmental stages. Classes focus on restorative practices, trauma-informed approaches, culturally diverse classroom resources, and equitable math evaluation methods, as these shape classroom interactions, behavior strategies, and lesson design. The Urban Teaching Apprenticeship master's program emphasizes hands-on learning, equipping future educators with student-focused techniques and modern teaching methods for city schools, grounded in the principle that children are naturally inquisitive, imaginative, and capable. Academic studies and immersive fieldwork strengthen subject mastery while fostering teaching expertise. Graduates emerge motivated to leverage education as a tool for enriching student growth, revolutionizing schools, and promoting fairness in learning opportunities.
