The Department of Early Childhood Education provides three distinct Master of Arts programs focused on early childhood education. These advanced programs deliver specialized training for professionals working with children from infancy through age eight and their families. The curriculum emphasizes creating ideal learning environments for young children during their crucial developmental years. Students can pursue the Master of Arts in Early Childhood Education - Initial Licensure pathway to obtain PreK-3 teaching certification in Tennessee. Alternatively, the Master Teacher and Researcher/Thesis tracks prepare graduates for leadership positions in early education, including teaching in high-quality programs, program administration, family support services, community outreach, academic research, and community college instruction.

Qualification Requirements

Graduate students whose native language is not English must submit one of the following: Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): Score of 79 (Internet-Based), Score of 550 (Paper-based). International English Language Testing System (IELTS): Score of 6.5.

Each applicant to the graduate program in early childhood education must complete the following:
Complete all the requirements for admission to the School of Graduate Studies.
Present a minimum of a 3.0 undergraduate grade point average or complete a probationary period in which the student achieves a grade point average of 3.0 and no grade lower than a B in the first 9 credits of graduate credit.
Be reviewed by the Early Childhood Admission committee. Those who do not have an undergraduate degree in early childhood education or a related field of study may be required to take selected undergraduate courses that will strengthen the applicant's background in early childhood education.

Graduate students seeking PreK-3 licensure must be admitted to the Teacher Education program. They must file a Declaration of Intent with the college's Office of Student Services, be recommended by an Admissions Board, and complete all other requirements for admission to teacher education including submission of a criminal background check.
