The master's program in Professional Counseling serves as the second phase of our M.S.Ed. in Counseling and Mental Health Services, equipping graduates to obtain Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) credentials. Alongside the M.Phil.Ed. degree, participants may choose to earn School Counseling Certification. This program provides two pathways: Track 1 focuses solely on the M.Phil.Ed., while Track 2 combines the M.Phil.Ed. with School Counseling certification. Track 1 students train exclusively for LPC licensure, qualifying them for diverse mental health environments. Track 2 candidates pursue dual qualifications - both LPC licensure and School Counseling certification - enabling practice in educational institutions. The School Counseling track mandates passing national examinations, completing supervised internships, and fulfilling additional certification requirements.
Admission to Penn GSE requires satisfactory completion of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited U.S. university or its equivalent prior to your matriculation into any program.
A strong command of the English language is necessary for successful study at Penn. Applicants whose families do not speak English at home, or applicants who have not attended a high school or secondary school where the primary language of instruction is English, are asked to take the TOEFL, the Test of English as a Foreign Language, administered by the Educational Testing Service. In the event the TOEFL is not readily accessible, Penn will accept results from the IELTS, the International English Language Testing System.
