The Department of South Asian Studies serves as the primary academic division within the School of Arts and Sciences at Penn, dedicated to education and scholarship concerning South Asia. It provides instruction in multiple contemporary and ancient South Asian languages, alongside diverse courses covering various aspects of the region. Faculty members bring wide-ranging specializations in the subcontinent's languages, literature, history, cultural traditions, religious practices, and artistic expressions. The MA program in South Asian Studies aims to provide students with comprehensive regional understanding while enhancing their language proficiency, preparing them for professional paths in commerce, legal fields, non-profit sectors, or public service. Additionally, it offers foundational preparation for doctoral studies to students needing stronger linguistic or academic grounding in South Asian studies.
