The Master of Arts (MA) in Asian Studies (AST) offers a comprehensive examination of Asia's cultural, economic, and socio-political importance in today's world. Students must demonstrate proficiency in at least one Asian language. To facilitate this, the program encourages MA candidates to complete a portion of their studies overseas. For those pursuing careers in language education, the degree features specialized tracks: Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language under Chinese Studies, or Japanese Language and Pedagogy within the Asian Studies concentration. Alumni of this MA program gain significant advantages when seeking employment with government agencies like the Foreign Service and State Department, educational institutions from K-12 to community colleges, international business sectors, NGOs, publishing houses, translation services, or when applying to doctoral programs in Chinese, Japanese, or broader Asian Studies. The Chinese Studies specialization (30-42 units, with 12 core units) presents two pathways: 1) Chinese Language and Culture or 2) Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language.
