The Department provides complete M.A. and Ph.D. programs on a full-time basis. These academically challenging programs cover a wide array of specializations. Our M.A. curriculum gives students a thorough grounding in the scholarly examination of literature and culture, while the Ph.D. program equips graduates for active roles in academia as researchers and educators specializing in English and American literature in its broadest sense. With over seventy graduate students working closely with thirty-eight distinguished faculty members recognized worldwide, the Department fosters expertise across numerous historical eras, theoretical fields, and research methodologies. Numerous faculty members transcend conventional period and disciplinary boundaries, and we motivate our students to apply equal originality and inventiveness to their academic pursuits and instructional practices.
Applicants for master’s and doctoral programs must have obtained a bachelor’s degree from an accredited School or University prior to intended matriculation date.
A strong command of the English language is necessary for successful study at Penn. Applicants whose families do not speak English at home, or applicants who have not attended a high school or secondary school where the primary language of instruction is English, are asked to take the TOEFL, the Test of English as a Foreign Language, administered by the Educational Testing Service. In the event the TOEFL is not readily accessible, Penn will accept results from the IELTS, the International English Language Testing System.
