The Graduate Group in EALC oversees a Master of Arts program focused on East Asian Humanities. This program serves as both an entry point for advanced graduate studies and a foundation for careers in education, administration, and various public/private sector roles. Particularly beneficial for those aiming to work in East Asia, the degree provides adaptable options for students wishing to pair it with another Penn MA or pursue studies part-time. The EALC Master's emphasizes humanities fields including East Asian literature, philosophy, religion, art, and archaeology, frequently incorporating demanding language components like classical Chinese, Japanese, or Mongolian alongside modern language studies.
Applicant will have at least majored as an undergraduate in the field for which they are applying and so would have had a minimum of six semesters of their primary East Asian language as well as some literature, history or religion courses. Some background in a second East Asian language is preferred.
A strong command of the English language is necessary for successful study at Penn. Applicants whose families do not speak English at home, or applicants who have not attended a high school or secondary school where the primary language of instruction is English, are asked to take the TOEFL, the Test of English as a Foreign Language, administered by the Educational Testing Service. In the event the TOEFL is not readily accessible, Penn will accept results from the IELTS, the International English Language Testing System.
