The Interdepartmental Graduate Group in Art and Archaeology of the Mediterranean World (AAMW) provides a master's degree program focused on Mediterranean Archaeology. This curriculum offers comprehensive academic and hands-on instruction in various archaeological techniques for students passionate about exploring the visual and material heritage of the Mediterranean region, encompassing areas like the ancient Near and Middle East, spanning from 3000 BCE through Late Antiquity, early Byzantine, and early Islamic eras. The program additionally encourages student involvement with the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology (Penn Museum). Graduates will be well-prepared to enter top-tier Ph.D. programs globally, pursue museum curatorial roles, teach at secondary schools, or assume leadership positions in cultural resource management firms. Faculty members provide personalized guidance to help M.A. candidates reach their objectives and advance their professional aspirations.
Applicants must have completion of bachelor’s degree.
A strong command of the English language is necessary for successful study at Penn. Applicants whose families do not speak English at home, or applicants who have not attended a high school or secondary school where the primary language of instruction is English, are asked to take the TOEFL, the Test of English as a Foreign Language, administered by the Educational Testing Service. In the event the TOEFL is not readily accessible, Penn will accept results from the IELTS, the International English Language Testing System.
