The Composition Ph.D. program emphasizes developing compositional skills, studying modern repertoire, and mastering theoretical analysis. Most coursework involves composition training, primarily through one-on-one lessons. Students enhance their learning by engaging in departmental performances and attending Composers Forum gatherings. The Director of Graduate Studies, consulting with composition faculty, pairs students with instructors for their composition lessons. To ensure diverse perspectives, faculty rotate teaching assignments, allowing students to work with all composition professors during their studies. Additionally, the University of Pennsylvania's Music Department provides a Music Studies Ph.D. program, enabling composition students to take relevant courses with music studies faculty throughout their degree.
