The Doctor of Philosophy in Mathematics is an advanced academic degree tailored for individuals aspiring to careers in mathematical research. This prestigious qualification is awarded in acknowledgment of exceptional mathematical proficiency and the completion of a substantial, original research project. The Ph.D. curriculum systematically prepares students to evolve into research mathematicians, typically spanning five years (including dissertation work), though ambitious students may finish sooner. The program unfolds in distinct phases. Initially, students focus on coursework and pass a comprehensive preliminary examination to build a solid mathematical foundation. The subsequent phase involves an oral preliminary exam on two selected topics, seminar participation, and begins guiding students toward their specialization while exposing them to current research trends. During this period, candidates may also qualify for a master's degree. The culminating phase centers on the dissertation, where students produce original mathematical contributions. Throughout this journey, the program provides structured support to help students achieve this creative milestone in mathematical advancement, while also requiring them to gain teaching experience.
Applicants for admission are expected to have a mathematical background that is comparable to a strong undergraduate mathematics major.
On the TOEFL, we look for total scores of at least 100, and scores of at least 20 on the spoken English portion.
