Phonetics examines the scientific aspects of spoken language, focusing on how speech sounds are produced, their acoustic properties, and how they're perceived. Our Phonetics Lab investigates these diverse elements. The Linguistics Ph.D. program at Penn incorporates various theoretical approaches and research techniques, all united by a dedication to rigorous formal analysis of human language acquisition and usage. While rooted in generative linguistics, we actively encourage integrating different empirical and theoretical viewpoints. Through partnerships with departments like computer science and psychology, we foster an interdisciplinary understanding of language. Alongside comprehensive education, students develop expertise in their specialized linguistics fields, equipping them for meaningful academic exchange both within and beyond the program.
