The Linguistics PhD program provides considerable flexibility and opportunities for specialization, enabling students to rapidly progress toward conducting original research. Candidates can select from various established specialization areas or collaborate with faculty advisors to create customized focus areas.
The Linguistics Department provides graduate studies culminating in Master of Arts degrees in Linguistics and Teaching English as a Second Language, along with a Doctor of Philosophy in Linguistics.
The Linguistics PhD is structured in three phases, aligning with the Graduate College's doctoral degree framework (refer to chapter 6 of the Graduate College Handbook). The complete PhD program typically spans 5-6 years: 2 years for Phase 1, followed by 3-4 years for Phases 2 and 3.
Phase 1, designed for completion within two years, involves 40 graduate credit hours and a qualifying examination. Upon finishing Phase 1, students qualify for a Master's degree in Linguistics.
Phase 2 requires 64 graduate credit hours, includes a second qualifying examination, and culminates in the preliminary examination.
