Language evolution refers to applying evolutionary principles to language development. While we typically associate evolution with biological changes, language evolution also involves cultural factors. The Cultural Evolution of Language Laboratory examines how these processes influence language formation. Penn's Linguistics Ph.D. program covers diverse theoretical approaches and research methods, united by rigorous formal analysis of human language acquisition and usage. While rooted in generative linguistics, the program fosters innovation through integrating empirical data with theoretical frameworks. Through partnerships with fields like computer science and psychology, students gain interdisciplinary insights into language studies. Alongside comprehensive training, students specialize in specific linguistic domains, developing expertise essential for meaningful academic discourse both within and beyond the program.
