The Department of Linguistics provides advanced studies culminating in a Ph.D. degree. Graduate students can specialize in various disciplines including syntax, semantics, phonology, phonetics, psycholinguistics, language development, morphology, and Optimality Theory. The program emphasizes early preparation for independent scholarly research and teaching in theoretical linguistics. Designed to foster close mentorship, the curriculum encourages frequent interaction between students and faculty. Many alumni secure faculty positions in theoretical linguistics at global institutions. Ranked among the top four linguistics graduate programs, UMass Amherst attracts over 130 annual applicants but admits only 5-8 students per year. Due to the program's design, admissions occur exclusively for the fall semester.
