Genomics and computational biology have become pivotal in modern biomedical research. These fields employ a comprehensive methodology to investigate the beginnings, roles, and relationships of entire biological systems through both experimental and computational approaches. Consequently, such research demands expertise across multiple domains, crucially requiring the ability to combine and apply knowledge from biology, computer science, mathematics, statistics, and engineering. This interdisciplinary fusion calls for a new breed of researchers comfortable working across traditional boundaries, spanning molecular, cellular, and organismal biology (including genetics), along with mathematics, statistics, chemistry, and engineering. The GCB program aims to cultivate specialists who master one or more of these areas while maintaining proficiency in others. Our curriculum offers thorough training in Genomics and Computational Biology, equipping students with a solid grounding in both biological and quantitative sciences, complemented by hands-on experience in computational and experimental genomics. This educational foundation will prepare graduates to adapt as technological advancements reshape their professional landscapes.
Applicants for master’s and doctoral programs must have obtained a bachelor’s degree from an accredited School or University prior to intended matriculation date.
Admissions to our program are based on basic training including molecular biology, genetics, statistics/mathematics, and/or computer science.
A strong command of the English language is necessary for successful study at Penn. Applicants whose families do not speak English at home, or applicants who have not attended a high school or secondary school where the primary language of instruction is English, are asked to take the TOEFL, the Test of English as a Foreign Language, administered by the Educational Testing Service. In the event the TOEFL is not readily accessible, Penn will accept results from the IELTS, the International English Language Testing System.
