The genetics and genomics research team within the Department of Animal Science focuses on two primary domains: quantitative genetics and functional genomics. Students have the option to specialize in animal science while concentrating their studies and research in genetics or genomics. Another pathway allows students to combine an animal science major with a co-major in either genetics or functional genomics, with both specializations appearing on their graduate transcripts. Earning a Ph.D. in Animal Science demonstrates a candidate's capacity to independently perform advanced original research and academic work. This degree is awarded after the student exhibits thorough expertise and academic achievement in a specific discipline. Requirements include completing an original research dissertation, passing comprehensive exams in their specialization and related fields, and successfully defending their thesis. Our department provides exceptional educational, research, and outreach initiatives that enable faculty and students to tackle pressing challenges in the global animal industry. We generate insights to enhance the productivity and sustainability of animal agriculture, biomedical research, and animal husbandry practices.
