Adopting an interdisciplinary approach, faculty and students investigate matters of fairness, societal equity, and transformative education across various formal and informal learning environments. You'll choose a specialization such as pedagogy, teacher education research and practice, STEM education, or urban education studies. For those focused on literacy, Penn GSE's Reading/Writing/Literacy doctoral program may be of interest. Your curriculum will encompass coursework in pedagogy, social foundations, and research methodologies. This doctorate program emphasizes educational practice for academic professionals, curriculum experts, and teaching leaders. The Ed.D. in Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education is designed specifically for scholar-practitioners. Alumni pursue careers as university researchers and teacher educators, educational agency curriculum designers and assessors, school district curriculum coordinators, and K-12 instructional leaders and educators.
Applicant must have Master’s degree and experience in educational practice.
A strong command of the English language is necessary for successful study at Penn. Applicants whose families do not speak English at home, or applicants who have not attended a high school or secondary school where the primary language of instruction is English, are asked to take the TOEFL, the Test of English as a Foreign Language, administered by the Educational Testing Service. In the event the TOEFL is not readily accessible, Penn will accept results from the IELTS, the International English Language Testing System.
