The Dual Romance Languages Major enables students to undertake in-depth studies in two Romance Languages, choosing from French, Spanish, and/or Italian. This 18-credit program requires nine advanced courses for each selected language. Students seeking more details should reach out to the Undergraduate Coordinator or relevant department chairs for advice. At the University of Pennsylvania, the Department of Romance Languages provides instruction in French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, and Catalan, covering language, literature, and cultural studies at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Undergraduate offerings span from introductory language classes to specialized seminars on French, Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese cultures, catering to majors and other interested learners. Graduate programs (French, Italian, and Hispanic Studies) explore the cultural output of France, Italy, Spain, Latin America, and other historically influenced regions. Through intimate seminar settings, graduate students examine these cultural expressions using diverse critical approaches, including cultural studies, postcolonial theory, and philosophy. The Department's strong track record in student placements reflects its dedication to both academic excellence and professional development for graduate students.
