Studying mathematics equips individuals to analyze problems, identify their core elements, and explore them systematically. This skill proves valuable across numerous disciplines including economics, law, medicine, engineering, and computer science—in addition to conventional academic pursuits like research and teaching. The major program aims to help students develop both mathematical comprehension and practical application skills. Our objective is to encourage the exploration of novel mathematical concepts alongside their implementation in other domains. The mathematics major establishes a strong base for graduate studies in mathematics while also preparing students for work in economics, biological sciences, physical sciences, engineering, and unconventional fields. Students can tailor their education by selecting relevant electives within the major. Multiple elective options are available, catering to mathematics majors and those seeking advanced mathematical training. Most courses require completion of the foundational two-year calculus sequence. The mathematics major also serves as exceptional preparation for those pursuing careers in K-12 education. Those interested in the elementary education undergraduate major or the secondary education submatriculation program (which culminates in a Master's degree) should contact both the Undergraduate Chair and the Director of Teacher Education in the Graduate School of Education.

Qualification Requirements

International applicant should have completed a program of secondary education that would enable you to enter a university in your own country (e.g., A-levels, Abitur).

A strong command of the English language is necessary for successful study at Penn. Applicants whose families do not speak English at home, or applicants who have not attended a high school or secondary school where the primary language of instruction is English, are asked to take the TOEFL, the Test of English as a Foreign Language, administered by the Educational Testing Service. In the event the TOEFL is not readily accessible, Penn will accept results from the IELTS, the International English Language Testing System.
