The University of Pennsylvania's Biology Department extends a warm welcome to you. Our program is dedicated to offering students diverse opportunities to investigate the incredible variety of biological systems in today's world. Alongside the standard major, students can choose from six specialized concentrations, each providing focused exposure to both theoretical and practical aspects of specific biological fields. Biology majors have access to research opportunities across Penn's campus, including facilities at the medical school and hospital network. Many students also enhance their education through international study programs, taking courses at institutions like the University of Edinburgh or participating in ecological research in locations such as Australia, New Zealand, and Costa Rica. Throughout their academic journey, all majors benefit from a supportive network of faculty mentors and peer advisors.
International applicant should have completed a program of secondary education that would enable you to enter a university in your own country (e.g., A-levels, Abitur).
A strong command of the English language is necessary for successful study at Penn. Applicants whose families do not speak English at home, or applicants who have not attended a high school or secondary school where the primary language of instruction is English, are asked to take the TOEFL, the Test of English as a Foreign Language, administered by the Educational Testing Service. In the event the TOEFL is not readily accessible, Penn will accept results from the IELTS, the International English Language Testing System.
