Our PhD program features a rigorous selection of advanced courses centered on German-language literature and cultural studies from the Enlightenment onward. Applicants may join the PhD track with either a bachelor's or master's degree.
The Department of German and Scandinavian provides both master's and doctoral programs in German studies. Graduate scholars work alongside distinguished faculty, acquire teaching skills, and pursue academic interests through collaborative research initiatives.
The doctoral coursework presents an in-depth examination of German literary traditions and cultural developments post-Enlightenment. Core 500- and 600-level classes integrate theoretical frameworks with genre studies and historical analysis.
Cross-disciplinary approaches are actively promoted within the curriculum. Qualifying examinations occur in the fourth year (for BA entrants) or second year (for MA entrants). Following candidacy approval, students complete six additional pass/no pass courses during their dissertation phase, maintaining academic connections and peer engagement throughout their research journey.
