The Economics Department provides first-year sequences in microeconomic theory, macroeconomic theory, and econometrics, with qualifying exams (micro and macro) administered during summer. Students focus on their selected specialization areas during their second year or early third year. Degree requirements include a field-specific research paper in the third year and a dissertation, usually finished by the fourth or fifth year.

The admissions committee are looking for students to have an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0, and if you have graduate level work, a 3.5 GPA at that level. Strong grades in economics and mathematics courses are especially important.
