The discipline of Classics explores Greek and Roman civilizations spanning from prehistoric times through the Middle Ages. Undergraduate students primarily focus on mastering Greek or Latin (or both) to proficiently read ancient texts in their original forms. By examining classical literature both in its native tongue and English translations, along with other classical subjects like ancient history, philosophy, art history, mythology, and rhetoric, learners develop insights into the cultural values of antiquity and their lasting impact on Western languages and traditions.
The department provides a Bachelor of Arts in Classics, allowing students to specialize in either Latin language and literature, Greek language and literature, or a blend of both. Alternatively, learners can explore ancient civilizations through secondary sources and translated works, or concentrate on Classical Archaeology and material artifacts.
