The Master's program in Physics offers two pathways: completing and defending a thesis, or successfully passing departmental qualifying exams (including an oral presentation component). Prior enrollment as a master's student is mandatory for both options. Astronomy-focused Physics master's candidates must complete a thesis.

Qualification Requirements
Our graduate college sets a minimum GPA of 3.0/4.0 over the last 60 hrs of graded course work. Applicants should have a minimum US equivalent of a BS in Physics, Astronomy or in a closely related field.
Test scores, either self-reported or official test scores sent to us through ACT and/or The College Board. Your test scores may also be included on your official high school transcript.

The graduate school requires a minimum TOEFL score of 550/213/79 for paper/computer/IB or IELTS 6.5. However, our department prefers applicants who demonstrate a higher level of English proficiency, 600/250/100 or 7.0.
