The U.S. Legal Studies concentration provides internationally-trained attorneys with a comprehensive foundation in American legal principles and practices. Participants can customize their coursework to align with personal objectives, including preparation for bar examinations in certain U.S. states.

This specialization offers classes such as Civil Procedure, Contracts, Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, Property Law, and Torts, along with additional legal subjects.

Learners may pursue specialized certificates in Energy and Natural Resources Law or Indigenous Peoples Law by completing 12 credits of focused study within the 24-credit program requirement.

Qualification Requirements

To qualify for admission to the John B. Turner LL.M. program, applicants must have earned their first law degree LL.B., J.D., or equivalent. Admission is highly selective, and those admitted must have excellent law school records, strong letters of recommendation, proficiency in English and leadership potential. Although not required, some work or research experience following completion of the first law degree is preferred.
One of the following is required for any student for whom English is a second language. The College of Law MLS office must directly receive an official test score from the issuing organization. Scores submitted directly by a student will not be considered.
TOEFL minimum scores:
TOEFL iBT 100, or
TOEFL computer-based 250, or
TOEFL paper-based 600 on the paper-based tests.
IELTS minimum overall score of 7.0. In addition, no individual sub-section score can be below a 6.5. An official copy of the score must include subsection scores.
The Duolingo and Pearson test will no longer be accepted.
U.S. Degree Completion. International students who have completed or will be completing a U.S. degree at a regionally accredited college or university can substitute that degree for the TOEFL.
