The Mathematics Education graduate program at the University of Oklahoma equips students to enhance their careers as mathematics educators across various levels, from PK-12 schools to higher education institutions. Tailored for practicing PK-12 math teachers, the curriculum focuses on innovative teaching methodologies using problem-based learning and digital tools.
This program also serves career-changers pursuing math teaching certification and individuals aiming to instruct collegiate mathematics. Alumni frequently secure positions as K-12 math instructors, college professors, curriculum designers, school district administrators, and professional development specialists. With mathematics education remaining a critical-need field, program graduates enjoy excellent job prospects in both K-12 and postsecondary education.
The master's program consists of 36 graduate credit hours, with about 15 credits dedicated to core instruction. Students complete the remaining credits in their chosen specialization area. All candidates must satisfactorily finish either a thesis, capstone project, or comprehensive exams.
The thesis pathway involves producing a scholarly paper followed by an oral defense. The project option requires developing a solution-oriented paper addressing a real-world challenge in the student's professional domain, evaluated by department faculty. Comprehensive exam content and assessment are determined by faculty members in the specialization area.
