The English Department at OU fosters a dynamic academic environment with scholars specializing in diverse fields including literary and cultural studies, rhetoric and composition, and film/media studies. Our department excels particularly in Rhetoric and Writing Studies (RWS) and Native American Literature (NAL). Graduates from our MA program frequently gain admission to leading PhD programs, while our RWS and NAL PhD recipients secure tenure-track positions at renowned institutions. We provide comprehensive PhD and Master's programs in two primary concentrations: Literary and Cultural Studies (LCS) and Rhetoric and Writing Studies (RWS). Approximately thirty distinguished faculty members, recognized nationally for their teaching and research across various historical periods and specialized areas, mentor our graduate students. Beyond our RWS and NAL strengths, the department offers expertise in Theory, Medieval/Early Modern studies, British/American literature, Creative Writing, transnational studies, interdisciplinary approaches, and film/media studies.
