A population capable of and dedicated to advocating for humanity's future must be cultivated through education. This group needs sufficient scientific understanding to identify when science is being manipulated for political ends. It requires the bravery to confront realities head-on. Members must be devoted enough to resist the allure of superficial civic engagement. They should possess the intellectual vigor to insist on thorough, nuanced examinations of societal challenges. They must discern between sound ecological reasoning and baseless claims. - Dr. David Orr, Paul Sears Distinguished Professor of Environmental Studies and Politics at Oberlin College. Environmental concerns are intricate and multifaceted, demanding approaches that transcend individual academic fields. OU's College of Arts and Sciences created the environmental studies program for learners seeking expertise in particular environmental domains while maintaining an interdisciplinary foundation. The environmental studies major provides a highly adaptable curriculum featuring a five-course foundation, with most selections coming from physical/natural sciences and methodological options. Beyond this core, students choose nine additional courses spanning three fundamental areas: environmentally-focused humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences.
