The chemical engineering program at OU began in 1912, awarding its first graduate degree in 1918. Throughout its history, the program has maintained strong foundational coursework while adapting elective options to meet evolving industry demands. In 1963, the Schools of Chemical Engineering and Metallurgical Engineering merged to form the School of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science. This was later renamed in 2008 as the School of Chemical, Biological and Materials Engineering (CBME) to better represent its growing focus on bioengineering. Our committed faculty strive for academic excellence and professional leadership, fostering a collaborative environment that drives exceptional productivity. CBME has established extensive external research funding, with recent projects supported by 22 diverse sources including the National Science Foundation, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Department of Energy, Department of Defense, National Institutes of Health, Oklahoma Center for the Advancement of Science and Technology, and 10 corporate partners. All faculty members maintain active research programs with external funding expectations.
