The English Department offers both undergraduate and graduate programs focusing on two primary disciplines: Literature and Cultural Studies, along with Rhetoric and Writing Studies. Learners explore literary texts, movements, genres, themes, and authors within their cultural frameworks. The curriculum highlights analytical reading, narrative techniques, effective communication, linguistic studies, and significant historical and cultural developments. As OU's founding academic division established in 1892 (originally named the College of Liberal Arts), the College of Arts and Sciences remains the university's most comprehensive degree-granting unit, having awarded its first diploma in 1898. The liberal arts continue forming the cornerstone of OU's educational philosophy, equipping students with the tools for meaningful civic engagement and professional achievement. This college delivers OU's core curriculum, introducing all undergraduates to natural and social sciences while cultivating critical thinking skills and independent judgment. Degree-seeking students gain deeper training in foreign languages and humanities disciplines. We aim to develop graduates who demonstrate articulate written and verbal expression, innovative problem-solving, ethical decision-making, professional and community leadership, and lifelong learning habits. Through comprehensive liberal arts education, we enhance students' personal growth and societal contributions. Achieving these objectives involves pairing exceptional students with passionate scholar-educators in an intellectually stimulating environment, further enhanced by generous alumni support to create an unparalleled academic experience.
