The English Studies Major at Fresno State equips students to become middle and high school English educators. This state-approved California program fulfills the English Language Arts subject matter competency needed for admission into single-subject teaching credential programs.
Students take English courses alongside related subjects like literacy studies, drama, speech communication, and linguistics.
The English major cultivates essential skills valued across society: analytical reading, effective written and verbal communication, logical reasoning, research proficiency, ethical decision-making within historical contexts, and literary appreciation.
Upper-division coursework focuses on four key areas: literary history, genre studies, literacy seminars, and writing instruction. Masterpiece courses may fulfill minor and General Education requirements, while additional offerings include mythology, folklore, research methods, film studies, and women's studies.
Teaching credential candidates must complete specific prerequisites and specialized courses, some outside the English Department. Students should consult the credential advisor each semester for detailed program requirements.
