The program initially aimed to foster a greater understanding of Western civilization's key developments. Through examining significant intellectual accomplishments from ancient Greece and Rome to contemporary times, learners gain insight into the foundational concepts shaping their own society. This objective has since broadened to encompass exploration of diverse global cultures beyond the Western tradition. Established in 1937 within the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Letters was created to offer structured academic pathways for students passionate about classical and contemporary languages, literature, and related disciplines. Currently, the letters curriculum provides a meticulously designed humanities education culminating in a Bachelor of Arts degree.
