The department offers three primary areas of study: Geography, Environmental Sustainability, and Geographic Information Science (GIS), each available as either a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science. These disciplines are deeply interconnected, collectively presenting innovative perspectives and methodologies for comprehending and stewarding our world. While closely related, each field maintains its unique identity, opening diverse professional avenues for students and professionals alike. Environmental Sustainability has gained prominence as it explores how current societal demands can be fulfilled without jeopardizing future generations' ability to meet their own needs. This discipline arose from the realization that vital resources sustaining human life and comfort are diminishing in both availability and quality, even as global consumption escalates. Additionally, it acknowledges that challenges like renewable energy, climate change, biodiversity decline, water management, environmental equity, and air quality transcend traditional academic boundaries, requiring novel educational approaches. Environmental Sustainability programs merge ecological, economic, and social dimensions, equipping students with interdisciplinary skills to tackle these multifaceted problems. Those earning degrees in this field find rewarding careers in government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and corporate sectors. Program alumni will spearhead initiatives in research, policymaking, and strategic planning that advance sustainable development goals.
