Environmental challenges are intricate and multifaceted, requiring an interdisciplinary approach for comprehensive understanding and solutions. The University of Oklahoma's College of Arts and Sciences created its environmental studies program to equip students with specialized knowledge while maintaining a broad academic perspective. This highly adaptable major features a five-course foundation, with most selections coming from curated lists in physical/natural sciences and methodological skills. Students complement this core with nine additional courses spanning three fundamental areas: environmental humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences. The program pairs effectively with a nonprofit studies minor and serves as an excellent second major alongside disciplines like literature, political science, biology, or communications. Students pursuing business, journalism, or health sciences degrees can combine environmental studies through dual-degree programs. The major also provides strong preparation for graduate studies in diverse fields including conservation, environmental law, resource management, and ecological sciences.
