Tackle pressing societal and environmental issues. Numerous modern challenges possess a geographic component. Our professional and research programs utilize geographical principles and methods to address these concerns. Through UNT's Geography program, you'll gain expertise in applying research methodologies and spatial/environmental analysis to: Resolve issues concerning natural disasters like floods and droughts. Develop strategies for sustainable urban development. Assess how globalization and environmental shifts affect human safety. Examine humanity's influence on ecosystems. Determine optimal locations and markets for business growth. Detect disease transmission patterns. Organize and oversee water, energy, and other vital resources.
With expanding environmental regulations increasing local governments' responsibilities, there's growing demand for skilled professionals who can bridge municipal departments, regulatory agencies, and city management. This program prepares students to oversee compliance initiatives and ethical approaches for urban environmental sustainability. We encourage internships with government bodies or nonprofits working on relevant immediate concerns. When applicable, internship findings may serve as the foundation for a student's Master's thesis or alternative research project.
