The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry provides research-focused Master's and Ph.D. programs in both Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Chemistry. These programs aim to equip students with undergraduate chemistry backgrounds through advanced coursework, specialized study, and independent research opportunities. Participants engage in pioneering research across diverse fields including Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Marine and Atmospheric Science, Biochemistry, Organic and Inorganic Synthesis, Analytical Chemistry, Computational and Physical Chemistry, and Chemical Education. Many research outcomes lead to publications in peer-reviewed journals or conference presentations, frequently featuring student co-authors.
Addressing regional economic demands, we've incorporated a pharmaceutical chemistry specialization into our M.S. degree program. Our graduate students can explore various research domains, spanning both conventional chemistry disciplines and innovative interdisciplinary areas. Graduate students gain valuable experience by teaching undergraduate laboratories and guiding both undergraduate and new graduate students in research projects.
The Pharmaceutical Chemistry Ph.D. program at UNCW equips students for versatile careers in the pharmaceutical field. Our Chemistry & Biochemistry faculty support this mission by delivering comprehensive pharmaceutical chemistry coursework and diverse research concentrations, ranging from conventional drug discovery and medicinal chemistry to cutting-edge therapeutic antibody development. Beyond pharmaceutical industry roles, program graduates will be well-prepared for positions in the growing contract research (CRO) and biotechnology fields, academic careers, or launching innovative startup ventures.
